The Bhavani and neighbouring islands are in the Krishna River between the heritage city of Amaravathi, Vijayawada, and the planned capital city of Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh, Indian. These river islands cover an area of 1,800 hectares, approximately six times that of New York’s Central Park. The masterplan therefore provides an unprecedented opportunity to become the green lungs of the region that will redress the imbalance of open space per person and increase the liveability index for the citizens of the Andhra Pradesh capital region.

The master planning process was devised in three phases over a period of eight months with intense stakeholder coordination that included residents of the region, visitors, inter-departmental agencies and decision-makers and has been approved by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The first phase was to develop a vision for the seven islands along Krishna River. The Second to create a more detailed masterplan for Islands 1 & 3.
