Masterplan for a lakefront development. (Competition Entry)

Chennai's Sembakkam Lake, part of a hydrological network, is envisioned as a self-sustaining, resilient public space supporting migratory birds, flora, and fauna. The masterplan integrates ecological, social, and financial mechanisms with community involvement. Analyzing seasonality, the design introduces varied edge conditions: embankments, floodable terraces, and promenades. Active programs like sports and recreation occupy less flood-prone zones, while passive programs like farming and wetland parks enhance floodable areas. Monetizable activities offset maintenance costs. A scalable stakeholder association model will maintain and develop the lake, serving as a benchmark for other water bodies in Chennai.
