As the fastest growing commercial and residential area in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and with the busiest Suburban station handling as many as 3.75 lakh commuters/ day, Thane is in a need for street upgradation. The streets in their current configuration are not able to handle the volume and mix of traffic which is resulting in high levels of vehicular congestion as well as pedestrians having to walk on the vehicular right of way due to overcrowding on the footpaths.
Extending the public realm on these streets for the people remains the core essence of the street design. Through this exercise a substantial area of 11.32 acres of pedestrian realm was proposed to be added in the 13km intervention stretch. It includes space for pedestrians, cyclists, with 1236 new trees, 4.68 acres of newly landscaped area, 512 seating areas and a new 1 acre contiguous park along the lakefront. All of this can be achieved by reconfiguring the Right of Way of existing streets. The Thane Smart City Ltd has initiated the execution from the station area to the streets leading to it leading to a significant transformation with streets that prioritises the pedestrians and are comfortable to walk.
